How does a Sedum green roof work?
Sedum cassettes can be installed all year round and are therefore available throughout the year. Unlike our Sedum Roof Total Package, this product doesn’t require building the roof layer by layer. This means that when creating a green roof, virtually no mistakes can be made.
Each cassette is equipped with a mineral-rich substrate layer that ensures long-lasting durability. The substrate can absorb a large amount of water during heavy rainfall. During dry periods, the Sedum plants benefit from this natural water reservoir. Although a Sedum roof doesn’t necessarily need regular fertilisation, it’s recommended to apply fertiliser occasionally to maintain a healthy and attractive appearance over the years. For example, the manufacturer Ecostyle offers special fertiliser mixes tailored for this purpose.
If unexpected roof maintenance is required, the Sedum cassettes can be easily removed. Once the work is completed, they can just as easily be reinstalled thanks to the modular system.
Maintenance of a Sedum Roof
Fertilisation
Fertilising is one of the most important aspects of Sedum roof maintenance. Because a green roof should not be too heavy, a special lightweight substrate is used. This keeps the Sedum plants healthy and strong. A good organic fertiliser for Sedum roofs is Myco-Sedum from EcoStyle. We recommend fertilising in spring, and if needed, again after summer.
Gravel Edge
If your Sedum cassettes are bordered with a gravel edge, make sure that it remains free of leaves, weeds, or overgrown Sedum. This is not only important for appearance but also ensures that the gravel layer remains water-permeable.
Drainage
Check the roof drains several times a year for blockages to prevent your roof from turning into a water basin. Excess water is harmful to Sedum plants and may also cause roof damage.
Watering
Sedum cassettes can store water, allowing them to withstand most dry periods. During very long droughts, you can help the Sedum plants by watering your green roof thoroughly once a week.
Weeding
We recommend weeding your Sedum roof about three times a year to keep it free from unwanted plants.
When should you install a Sedum roof?
A Sedum cassette is not planted but rather laid on top of the roof surface. Therefore, it makes little difference whether the cassette is on your roof or still in our nursery. This means Sedum cassettes can be installed at any time of the year.
Sedum Ground Cover
In addition to ready-to-use Sedum roof cassettes, Covergreen also offers Sedum ground covers in the form of plant mats. These are pure plant mats intended for use on normal garden soil. Unlike the Sedum cassettes, they do not contain additional components such as a drainage layer or water-retaining substrate.
