Summers in Europe are becoming increasingly warmer and drier. In cities, temperatures can be up to 8°C higher than in rural areas, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA). This is due to the abundance of concrete, asphalt, and the lack of greenery — a phenomenon known as the “urban heat island effect.” Climate change is leading to longer periods of drought, taking a toll on gardens and parks. As a result, urban greening and the use of drought-resistant plants are becoming more and more important.
Fortunately, adding more greenery to cities can make a big difference. Green areas such as parks, planters, and trees provide natural shade and cooling. Plants lower the temperature through the process of water evaporation, known as “evapotranspiration.” Research shows that urban greening can reduce temperatures by 2–8°C, especially during hot summers. Moreover, plants improve air quality and enhance the well-being of city residents.
A smart way to tackle both heat and drought is by choosing plants that thrive under extreme weather conditions. These plants require less water and maintenance, reducing overall upkeep costs. At the same time, they keep gardens and parks looking vibrant all year round — even during hot and dry periods.
One of the best choices from the Covergreen range for drought-resistant planting is the Delosperma cooperi (also known as the Ice Plant). This plant is renowned for its hardiness and striking purple flowers. Delosperma is a succulent naturally adapted to dry conditions and high temperatures. It requires very little water and blooms from spring through autumn, adding long-lasting colour to gardens or slopes.
The increasing heat and drought in Europe call for smart, sustainable solutions for our gardens and cities. By focusing on urban greening and using drought-resistant plants, we can lower city temperatures and improve air quality.
